I have the honor to acknowledge

the receipt of Your Excellencies' letter of the

6th instant, regretting the departure of

Her Britannic Majesty's ship Amazon, and requesting that I would direct Captain Troubridge to return to Macao.

In reply, I must first inform Your Excellencies that although I considered it

my duty to call the attention of the Senior Naval Officer on the station to the unprotected state of

the harbour of this Colony,

I have no authority to direct the movements of any ships of war in

The Right Reverend Dom Jeronimo, Bishop of Macao His Honor Joaquim Antonio de Moraes Carneiro. Major Ludger Joaquim de Faria Neves,

and other members of the Council in charge of the Government

of Macao
